Job Title: Freelance Production Designer (ePub / Editorial Layout)

Rate: $30–$40/hour
Hours: ~35 hours/week
Duration: Immediate start through end of February (hard deadline)
Location: Remote (client’s downtown Toronto office also available)

Overview

We’re looking for a Freelance Production Designer to support a fast-turn, high-pressure ePub project with a non-negotiable end-of-February deadline. This role is ideal for a designer who is highly detail-oriented, technically confident, and experienced with multi-page layouts, hyperlinking, and ePub conversion.

This is a short-term engagement with a clear scope, quick interview process, and a small skills-based assignment to confirm technical fit. If you have experience designing multi-page editorial content (eBooks, reports, whitepapers) with interactive PDFs and hyperlinking, we’d love to hear from you. 

Key Deliverables

  • 5 templated ePub files

  • Each file will include:

  • Cover page

  • Index page

  • Body/content pages

  • End page

  • Approximately 20 total pages of unique content

  • Creation of functional internal hyperlinks

  • Example: clicking a date in an index/calendar navigates to the corresponding page

  • Convert source files (likely InDesign) for ePub delivery

  • Provide fully editable source files to the client upon completion

    Required Skills & Experience

    • Strong experience with editorial / production design

    • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign

    • Proven ability to:

    • Build clean, templated multi-page layouts

    • Set up and QA internal and external hyperlinks

    • Prepare and convert files for ePub

  • Excellent attention to detail and file organization

  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight timelines

  • 100% confidence in meeting a hard end-of-February deadline

    Nice to Have

    • Prior experience designing index-driven content

    • Familiarity with ePub standards and best practices

    • Experience delivering source files for handoff

    Process & Timeline

    • Quick interview turnaround

    • Short, targeted assignment to confirm layout and hyperlinking capability

    • Immediate start once selected

    Engagement Details

    • ~35 hours per week through end of February

    • Remote is fine; optional access to the client’s downtown Toronto office

    • Rate: $30–$40/hour, depending on experience
